Hunting Guides and Staff

Paul Conchâtre

Hello, my name is Paul and I am the owner of Birdtail Waterfowl. My passion for the outdoors began as far back as I can remember.

I have been involved in the lodging industry since the mid 1990’s and will continue to take it to the next level. Birdtail Waterfowl Service is a business that is taken very seriously. I feel that there is a dream hunt out there every morning and every evening! Our success and work ethic is what separates us from the rest. Birdtail Waterfowl has been a member of the Manitoba Lodges and Outfitters Association for many years and in 2010 I have been elected the President of the MLOA.

My guiding career has taken me all over Canada, as far north as the Arctic Ocean. I take great pride in my work ethic and my knowledge of the industry. Experience has been my greatest teacher. One of the most important aspects of guiding is a strong respect for nature and all its wonders! I have had numerous encounters, where my skills and knowledge have been tested – always enjoying and responding to the challenge. Some of my most rewarding experiences have been hunting throughout North America. Working alongside and learning different techniques used by fellow well-respected guides, has allowed me to incorporate some of their strategies into my own business.

I have guided for many reputable Canadian lodges and for many different species. Whitetail, Caribou, Musk Ox, Black Bear, Arctic Char, Lake Trout, Grayling, Pike, and Walleye are just a few. I have been involved in waterfowl industry for over 20 years, initially with Stanley’s Goose Camp and have not missed a day of each precious season.

Guiding for waterfowl in one of the most concentrated flyways in Canada has provided me with a great waterfowl education. Working in a professional environment has taught a great deal about running a successful waterfowl operation. There are many elements that go into having a great hunt and I pride myself in taking care of every detail. All good hunters know that it takes more than having great days in the field, to make a hunting trip, truly memorable!

My wife Catherine, and my family are looking forward to the approaching waterfowl season. We know that you will have an enjoyable experience with Birdtail Waterfowl.

Sean Pollock

Hi, my name is Sean Pollock and on behalf of my wife Cheryl and children Raina and Hunter, welcome to Birdtail Waterfowl.  I have been with Birdtail since 2002 however I have had the honour and privilege of being part of the Conchatre family for over 30 years.

Without a doubt, the knowledge and dedication that Paul and his family have to waterfowling and hunting in general is beyond description.  I have hunted extensively in Manitoba and seek every opportunity to get into our glorious wilderness to chase bear, moose, deer, predators as well as my true love; waterfowl.

I grew up hunting the very area that Birdtail is in and each scouting mission, hunt and sunset brings me closer to my roots.  It’s hard to describe in a few words what emotions a funneling tornado of Mallards or a setting family group of Canada’s can impart when back dropped against a prairie sunrise or sunset.  Each day we WILL provide you with sights, sounds and experiences that can only be found in this truly unique and spectacular setting.  If there is a waterfowlers Disneyland, we live in the heart of it.

Collectively there are hundreds of years of waterfowling experience amongst our staff but we never take for granted that each guest is experiencing this truly awesome migration and hunting opportunity with fresh eyes.  We pride ourselves on being on a constant learning journey focusing on both advancements in technology and conservation to ensure that we provide a truly one of a kind experience to all who join us.

Beyond the phenomenal hunting, you’ll have the chance to experience a diverse and unique landscape where sightings of the legendary Canadian whitetail and moose are regular occurrences.  There is literally nothing more gratifying that finishing off a limit hunt and returning to camp with the serenade of coyotes under the glimmering northern lights.  It’s as close to heaven as you can get on earth.

I look forward to visiting with old friends and can’t wait to make new ones when you come to see us at Birdtail Waterfowl.

Mike Conchâtre

Howdy! My name is Mike Conchâtre – Paul’s Dad!

The outdoors, hunting, fishing, canoeing, skiing are a tradition in our family. It all started with my great grandfather – a mountain guide hunting out Chamois and Ibex in the French Alps in the late 1800’s. The tradition has never left the family. It is alive and well.

My Dad’s family moved from France to Québec, where I was raised. Our Québec roots bring that zest for life, the “joie de vive”! Skiing in the winter, fishing for Brookies in the spring and summer, and then waterfowl hunting and guiding the big waters of Lac St-Pierre and the Gulf of St. Laurence has been a way of life for us.

In 1981, Ducks Unlimited beckoned. Then, my wife Pat, our daughter Andrea, son Paul and I moved west to Manitoba. I have worked for Ducks Unlimited since then and currently work out of our Corporate Office at Oak Hammock Marsh (near Winnipeg).

The discovery of Manitoba was and still is a wonder for us – the lakes, rivers and woodlands – big sky country! Fall is a wondrous time. More ducks and geese than we ever dreamed of when we lived back East! The snap of the autumn air, big sky, golden stubble in the fields, blue potholes filled with migrating waterfowl – deer, big deer – if you are a hunter, this is where it is at!

Paul was six when we arrived in Manitoba, when we began our Manitoba discovery together. We have driven, paddled, hiked, fished and hunted every corner of this beautiful province. From Paul’s first black-powder deer at age twelve, we have hunted together every chance we have had.

And now, like a good son, Paul has taken it to the next level, guiding in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, the North West Territories, – waterfowl, deer, bear, caribou, musk-ox, Lake Trout, Arctic Char and his Birdtail Waterfowl Service. It is with great pride that I work for him each fall!

Come and join us for a great hunt and a great time!

Ryan Suffron

Hello fellow waterfowler’s and wing shooters! I’m Ryan Suffron, the newest addition to the Birdtail Waterfowl Service team and a 16 year veteran to Manitoba’s hunting and fishing industry.

As far back as I can remember, I have spent the majority of my days dreaming about and carrying out a serious hunting and fishing addiction. I guess that’s what happens when you grow up in a resource rich province like Manitoba and in a family circle that requires such a pre requisite.

I believe that my undeniable passion for the great outdoors and everything it has to offer is truly one of life’s greatest gifts. I have been blessed with an amazing guiding and management career in my home province of Manitoba and our hunting and fishing industry as I know it, has allowed me to experience many life changing adventures from waterfowl on the coast of Hudson Bay, Caribou in Manitoba’s Barren lands, Moose in the far north to a diverse variety of fly fishing and angling adventures throughout our provincial boundaries. All life lasting memories that I have been able to share with so many great people!

With that said, I have had the privilege of knowing Paul Conchatre know for almost ten years. Most recently I had the opportunity to work with Paul within the Manitoba Lodges and Outfitters Association where I served as their Executive Director for two years. Paul is a dedicated person who takes the hunting business very seriously and one who exercises the utmost level of integrity and professionalism in everything he does. He always leads from example and sets each example high, a true ambassador to Manitoba’s hunting tourism sector.

I had a unique opportunity to come and hunt with Paul and his staff last fall, an invite that I previously took a rain check on but one that I knew would be crazy to reschedule more than once. From a person that has spent the majority of his life guiding at and managing various reputable and well respected hunting and fishing destinations I must say, that being on the other side of the coin, per say, was amazing. I personally view Birdtail Waterfowl Service as “Premier” a word that I feel best expresses a total package from start to finish that offers every hunter the best of everything! Paul and his staff do everything in their power to ensure that the needs of each and every hunter are met, and often exceeded. Point and simple!

It’s not everyday that you get to work with such an amazing group of professionals and a true winning team. I look forward to contributing to such a team and to the lasting memories that are offered to each and every visiting hunter, from far and wide.

Until then, hunt hard, fish often and live life to its fullest!

A little about myself, my wife Rochelle and I along with our two sons Logan (12) and Layne (9) reside in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. We are no strangers to the outdoors as it has been a passion of our family for many years. I was introduced to the ways of the outdoors by my dad growing up and I owe much of what I have learned about hunting and fishing to him. Summer camping trips for weeks on end to walleye / pike lakes in Western Manitoba to the annual moose hunt in the Duck Mountain Provincial Park have been the way of life for us. My newest found passion is spending time with my own two boys teaching them about the outdoors and enjoying time together afield. We spend countless hours together riding quads, fishing, hunting, checking trail cameras and just hanging out at our deer hunting shack in the hills or at our cabin at Ditch Lake. I am so blessed to have such a wonderful family and the ability to share the experiences of the great outdoors with the people you love is…..Priceless!! Jason Hamilton

Hi, I’m Jason Hamilton, new to Birdtail Waterfowl. Not new however to the guiding business.

If you’re reading this you’ve made about the best choice a waterfowler could make in considering a hunt in Manitoba’s prairie pothole region with Birdtail Waterfowl. The program here, the professionalism, the resource and the people make it unequivocally the finest waterfowl experience you, the hunter could ask for.

Growing up on the shore of Lake Superior I learned about the woods and waters from my dad chasing birds, deer and most anything with fins. My guiding career has taken to some amazing locations Great Slave Lake, Great Lakes steelhead tributaries and most recently Scott Lake Lodge. Moving to Manitoba for a career as a biologist tagging polar bears, whales and walrus allowed me to spend more time in the Canadian north, a place to always seems to draw me back. But also to get more serious about waterfowl hunting, which was in limited supply in my youth. Most recently I have been operating an icefishing guiding operation on Lake Winnipeg chasing giant walleye.

It is my distinct pleasure to have the opportunity to work as a guide here at Birdtail and be a part of your waterfowl hunting experience. Working for the best allows you to be your best as a guide.

Tyson Griffith

Hi, my name is Tyson Griffith. I am a new addition to the Birdtail Crew. My Main Job in the off season is as a Graphic designer / sign maker, but if I could hunt waterfowl every day I would. I love to fish and hunt all types of animals from Coyotes to White Tail Deer and everything in between. However, my greatest passion lies in waterfowl hunting; which has now turned into an obsession. I just can’t get enough. I think about waterfowl hunting every day; just ask my boss and my wife.

I got into waterfowl hunting when a couple friends of mine borrowed some old shell decoys from a family friend. We went out hunting and I have been hooked ever since! My philosophy towards hunting is that It’s not about how much you kill; it’s all about the hunt and the time spent in the outdoors. To me hunting is a very rewarding sport, especially when a hunt comes together as you planed it. There’s nothing else like it. So, whether it be bagging a trophy, filling limits, or just spending time outdoors with friends in the field, I love it!

My experience working at Birdtail this past fall was very positive. The hunting was awesome and the number of birds in the area is unreal. Great people, great food and awesome hunting sums up Birdtail Waterfowl. So Hunt Hard..

-Tyson Griffith

Jay Kuypers

Hey there, my name is Jay Kuypers, for over 25 years I have been chasing down fin and feather all over Manitoba. From remote fly in fishing camps, where all day long is C shaped rods, to the lush forest or farmland flushing upland game. But there is nothing like hunting waterfowl in Manitoba’s famous pothole region, situated in one of the largest waterfowl staging areas south of the great boreal forest.

The tradition of waterfowl hunting has been passed down through my family through 3 generations and coming on the fourth, so hunting is and always will be a part of my heritage. Most of my younger years were spent shooting bull canvasbacks and teal on the famous Portage Delta Marsh. It was here where this passion grew and developed.

I proudly represent Scott Threinen and Molt Gear calls in the field and at all my off season events, working as a pro-staff for Molt Gear and DOA Decoys has provided me with countless opportunities to provide calling instruction and to share my waterfowl experiences with our youth hunters here in Manitoba. Hunting is our heritage!

Working for the best waterfowl outfitter in Manitoba is an honor, our team of professional guides share the same unmistakable passion for water fowling. As we watch the sun rise and set we plan the next day’s custom guided hunt, the experience of creating new hunting adventures everyday is unbelievable.

If you crave ground blind therapy come see us….

-Jay Kuypers

Jordan Baker

Hey fellow outdoorsmen my name is Jordan baker I am the newest member of the Birdtail Waterfowl team. My family and I grew up in Northwestern Ontario in the Small town of kenora located on the shores of Lake of the Woods. As far back as I can remember we have been trolling the waters for Lake trout and big walleye, and once the trees dropped their leaves it was all about heading out into the woods on the hunt for ruffed grouse and whitetails.

My passion for the outdoors has led me deep into the Canadian wilderness to a fly in fishing lodge where I have guided 1000’s of people to some trips of a lifetime. Waterfowl hunting is my newest addition to my guiding career, I can’t imagine another fall ever going by without spending some quality time with good friends and experiencing all that the Western Manitoba pothole region has to offer, from the countless number of birds to the breath taking sunsets this place never seizes to amaze me.

In the off season I try to travel as much as possible and have found myself as far away as the outback in Australia. In recent years I have become an avid back country snowmobiler and my love for that sport has led me to Whistler British Columbia where for 4 months I find myself deep in mountains looking for that next great jump to hit or cliff to drop. I am looking forward to the upcoming season and seeing some old friend and meeting some new ones as well. See you all in the fall.
